Nike Missile
The U.S. decommissioned its Nike Missiles in the 1960s, but it seems that two slipped into Iraqi hands.

Professor Dave,
I'm pretty certain that the last US Nike Hercules battery was decommissioned in 1983/4 in Germany. The units in the US, Key West & Alaska, went away in the late 70's. Surprisingly enough the Nike was capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.
When Germany was still separated it was impossible to travel 50km without spotting a Nike, or Hawk, battery. Many of the old sites are now being used for farm equipment storage (beating swords to plow shears?)

Milo:
Thanks for spotting this. It looks like Nike Hercules batteries did continue to at least the late 1970s.
Our former home in Northern Virginia was a few miles from a former battery in Lorton, VA.
